Emma Eaton

Emma Eaton was a prize winning student at Claremont College from 1999 to 2001.

Topping her class in four pre-tertiary subjects, gave Emma a huge boost in self confidence when she enrolled at the University of Tasmania to do a Science degree. Her university costs were off set through Emma having won the Pasminco Scholarship for Science.
During Emma’s time at college, she credits a number of her teachers with having inspired her.

“[They went]….above and beyond the call of duty to help me out and their belief in me helped me to believe in myself…. And when you believe in yourself, I think you can do just about anything,” Emma says.
Emma explains that her time at uni so far has not all been easy and that at times it has been difficult to remain motivated. As a parent of a two year old, she has to be very good at time management, but has been lucky to have considerable support and encouragement from family and friends.
Emma’s motivation and hard work have certainly been reaping benefits with her having been awarded two scholarships to do research during the summer holidays at the end of 2005 and again, at the end of 2006.  Having achieved a double major in chemistry and bio chemistry, Emma was offered an honours scholarship in both areas but chose bio chemistry, as she particularly enjoys doing medical research.

“I like to think that the work I'm doing might help someone one day. I am doing honours with the muscle research group in biochemistry, which is now a part of the Menzies Research Institute, and the focus is primarily on diabetes research.  I hope to do a PHD after honours and eventually get a post doctoral position as a researcher,” says Emma.

Claremont College is proud to have played a part in Emma’s success and we wish her all the best for the future.
