When Luke was a student at Claremont College, he had decided that he wanted to become a vet and he knew that he would have to work hard to reach the entry requirements. He also knew that it would mean moving interstate, as Veterinary Science is not amongst the courses offered at the University of Tasmania.
All of this seemed very daunting to Luke, but his success in his subjects at college gave him the score that he needed to be accepted into the Veterinary Science course at the University of Queensland.
He moved into a student residential college and quickly made many friends by participating in a range of social clubs and activities provided by the university. Luke found the rock climbing club to be particularly useful for meeting people with similar interests.
While he was a student at CC, Luke was involved with a range of outdoor activities, such as climbing and kayaking and he has found those experiences invaluable as he has continued to pursue these interests at various places throughout Australia.
Luke continued to succeed with his studies while at university, graduating in 2005 with Honours. He hopes that in the future he will sit the membership exams for the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, but, in the meantime, Luke is enjoying keeping up to date with current practice by attending veterinary conferences whenever possible.
Luke is thoroughly enjoying his work as a vet and the clinic where he is based provides a wide variety of experiences as it is in a rural environment and he has to treat farm animals as well as domestic pets. Luke’s recent experience as a vet at the World Polocrosse Cup was an interesting experience for him and he found it challenging and exciting having to rush to the centre of the arena to treat an injured horse as the crowds watched.
When asked what advice he could give current college students, Luke suggested that it is wise to......
“Know where you want to end up and realise that it will all be worth it but you have to go the hard yards to get there. And take enough time off to relax and have variety in your life.”
Hearing of Luke’s success is very rewarding for the staff who knew him during his time at Claremont College. We wish him continued success for the future and would love to catch up with him when he next visits Hobart.
